The desire for this kind of inner experience and self- development arises from a psychic urge, a spiritual hunger – akin to the need of satisfying the hunger of the body – that is present in very different degrees in different persons. It is an expression of the instinctive drive to self-preservation on a psychic, not a biological level.

Those in whom it has been aroused are compelled to strive for the satisfaction of its demands or endure the pangs of spiritual hunger and eventual starvation.
